Free report plots nanotechnology present, future
Wondering what’s happening in the exciting world of nanotechnology? A free 198-page report offers everything you could possibly want to know, and more.
The “Technology Roadmap for Productive Nanosystems,” published by the Battelle Memorial Institute and the nonprofit Foresight Nanotech Institute, profiles nanotechnology’s current state and future expectations.
Foresight says the report “is a first attempt to lay out a step-by-step course of development that must take place to move from one stage to another, with milestones for achieving each step.” The collaborative report, based on inputs from numerous nanotechnology specialists and companies “[identifies] the gap between the basic nanostructured materials of today, and the potential of productive nanosystems.”
What’s nanotechnology all about?
Foresight defines nanotechnology as “a group of emerging technologies in which the structure of matter is controlled at the nanometer scale, the scale of small numbers of atoms, to produce novel materials and devices that have useful and unique properties.”
“Some of these technologies impose only limited control of structure at the nanometer scale, but they are already in use, producing useful products,” continues Foresight. “They are also being further developed to produce even more sophisticated products in which the structure of matter is more precisely controlled.”
Foresight has identified six key challenges facing nanotechnologists:
- Providing Renewable Clean Energy
- Supplying Clean Water Globally
- Improving Health and Longevity
- Healing and Preserving the Environment
- Making Information Technology Available To All
- Enabling Space Development
