World’s teeniest SVGA color LCD?

Kopin Corp. claims its new fingernail-sized display is the world’s smallest SVGA resolution (800 x 600 pixel) color LCD. The 0.44-inch diagonal CyberDisplay SVGA LVS microdisplay targets PC- and HD-related video eyewear applications.

The company’s CyberDisplays are transmissive LCD displays based on a similar architecture to that of flat panel TV LCDs, but with much smaller pixels. For example, this latest microdisplay has 11.25 µm-square pixels — less than 1,000th the size of the pixels on current LCD TVs, according to the company.

“Conventional LCD TVs and laptop screens can now be reduced to fingernail sizes, which could open major applications for displaying high-resolution images in mobile portable devices,” said Kopin CEO Dr. John C. C. Fan.

The breakthrough pixel geometries are attributed to an investment in and development of 8-inch wafer processing over the past two years. Executive VP Dr. Boryeu Tsaur says the company “combined smaller pixel transistors and the planar multi-metal layer process offered by 8-inch Si IC processing with an enhanced nanotechnology process for its liquid crystal alignment and a precision cell-gap liquid crystal assembly process.”

Compared to the company’s previous SVGA microdisplay, the new display is said to occupy a 45 percent smaller area and consume 30 percent less power.

Kopin is showcasing the CyberDisplay SVGA LVS display at the CES tradeshow in Las Vegas this week. A limited number of sample unites are available for evaluation and design-in, the company says. For further details, visit Kopin’s website.
