Analyst sees 200M UMDs shipping in 2013

From a virtual standing start of just 10 million units in 2008, more than 10 million ultra-mobile devices (UMDs) are expected to ship in 2013, predicts ABI Research. UMD is ABI’s umbrella term for UMPCs (ultra-mobile PCs), netbooks, and MIDs (mobile Internet devices).

LTE networks to include femtocells, picocells

Femtocells and picocells are likely to form an integrated part of initial rollouts of LTE (long term evolution) networks, ABI Research reports. These cellular mini-base stations, featuring improved indoor wireless coverage, reportedly have been generating considerable interest in mobile wireless markets.

Atom processor powers Pico-ITX SBC

Taiwan-based Axiomtek has released a tiny single-board computer (SBC) based on a 1.1GHz Intel Atom processor. The Pico820 SBC is implemented on a Pico-ITX form-factor and targets space-constrained embedded and mobile applications.

Intel Mini-ITX mobo targets nettops

Intel has announced a mini-motherboard aimed at a new category of mini-PCs dubbed “nettops.” Interestingly, the “Desktop Board D945GCLF2,” powered by a 1.6 GHz dual-core Atom Processor 330, is built in the Mini-ITX format pioneered by Intel competitor Via Technologies.

Tiny projector targets mobile gadgets

Microvision will showcase a tiny laser projector — small enough to be embedded in a mobile phone — at the CTIA Wireless show next week in Las Vegas. The company claims its mobile pico-projector technology produces highly focused DVD-quality WVGA (848×480 pixels) images of up to 100 inches in size (depending on distance).

3G phone features e-paper rollout display
