with Ubuntu 9.04 the sound is 'strange'.
With Mepis 8.0.06 it works right.
Fine!

I use PCLOS but I've tested over time Mepis 7.
It is a great distribution and I certainly hope Mepis 8 will be perfect.
It belongs in the top 5 of distro's and it will be when things develope, I think.
It is looking great, it feels the same.
Sound and video did work perfectly on the livecd and all did on my Intel Celeron 64 2core plus nVidia.
I'll keep watching this great peace of art and maybe once I will make a switch.

I tried to install Mepis-7.9.91beta4_32, but the installation hung in repeated tries before correct config of X-org. [The video is an nvidiaMX4000 series.] Then, I tried Mepis7.0 with the same problem. So, I 'reverted' to Mepis6.5. It works very well, including the Linksys (Cisco) home wireless. Yet, when I tried to install the 'legacy' nvidia driver, the video crashed so I reloaded the OS. [The machine was a Shuttle m/b; Athlon 1.2 GHz; 512 mb ram unit, an old work horse.]
 When I used Mepis6.0 ca. two years ago, I had no problem installing the nvidia driver, which was an option during the install routine.
 In spite of this hiccup, Mepis I still rank near the top for ease of installation, stability, and speed.
 Any advice would be welcomed.

this looks like a chance for mepis to get back on top. however, the mess with nvidia handling must be addressed. ubuntu "hardware driver" should be the standard. best wishes, marku

Tried the fourth beta of Mepis 8. Overall it was a pleasure-ride. But any guess when the final gold will come out? I need to deploy the final version in my home office.

I'm curious to know the boot time on your test rig. But other than that it looks promising.

I have been using Mepis since 6.0 and I love it. I had Mepis 7.0 running perfectly on an HP dv2xxx and installed 8.0 b1 and my wireless broke. I tried 8.0 b2 and no change. Then I though it must be something I did as Mepis has always just worked. I did a fresh install with 8.0 b3, not just the / and voila, it was perfect again. I have never seen a distro this good although I also use the Ubuntu family, Mint, Sabayon and Dreamlinux. Mepis is simply my favorite with Mint a close second. Thanks Warren, you are the man!

Thanks for the great review of Mepis 8 beta! Sounds very encouraging.
Thank you also for not being a total Ubuntu fan boy/girl. My experiences with Ubuntu have led me to dub it "The Starbucks of Linux". Debian and Mepis are faster and much easier to install and use! Mepis won me as a supporter by doing two things very well: Mepis is easy to install AND Mepis...just...works!!!

I have used every version of Mepis since 3.31 and it has always impressed me, does everything I want/need and hopefully, the recently built the community repository for Mepis 7 will be carried over to Mepis8, making it possible to keep M8 up to date with the latest apps backported from testing. My existing M7 is easily as up to date as the "hottest" distros out there, except for the kernel and xorg thanks to the community repository.

I have repeatedly tried out many other distros, but pretty or flashy just doesn't do it for me, I haven't found anything to compare to Mepis for its sheer stability and hardware detection. Only thing that I found it really lacks is midi support, though that's very low in my priority list.

@ Dr Saleem - you can report bugs directly to Warren, email: dev@mepis.org and upgrading through the testing phase should give you essentially the same as the installed version.

The community have assembled a remastering script so rebuilding your own Live CD or growing it to a DVD with all you favorite apps preloaded is fully possible, provided you can use the cli. http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.php/Remastering_script
A little help from some gurus out there to streamline the process and iron out a few bugs would be very welcome, though as it is, it works very well for remastering the ISO. Remastering from hard disk is really where we need some input.

Gnome should be possible if you want to try your hand at remastering, but I'm not sure if the Mepis assistants would work with Gnome. Personally, I prefer KDE for its power and integration, Gnome based systems just seem too disconnected to me, though I do like its smaller resource use.

Did you try 'apt-get install icedove' to get Thunderbird? Debian has rebranded its Mozilla packages to more comport with its conception of the GPL.
Firefox = iceweasel
Seamonkey = iceape
Thunderbird = icedove
Sunbird - iceowl

I had a Mepis 3 install (Debian based before Woodford switch to Ubuntu for a while), but broke it when it became long in the tooth and I tried to upgrade it. Hopefully this version will be more compatible with Debian so I can keep it updated without needing to reinstall. I also have an Ubuntu based release that does what it needs to, but is also getting a bit dated. Ubuntu isn't a rolling release and I suspect if I did a "dist-upgrade" to a newer Ubuntu release it would break, so I'll just keep it as is until its time for a fresh install.
